The following post is intended to be a preserved copy of the record of my family, going back thirty-two generations.  I will update it as new information becomes available.

Dedication

This short volume is dedicated to Wonderful, Almighty GOD who saw fit to establish this Ancient Family and give each of us the opportunity to live a life of Worship in His Service. We pray for His Grace and Forgiveness as we attempt to live in His Purpose. We humbly ask that He take this small work and use it to inspire us and future generations to Great Deeds of selflessness, that though they never be recognized, advance the Glory of His Name and work to the Benefit and Salvation of Mankind.

Prologue

What follows is one branch detailing 32 generations of the HYDE Family Tree beginning in Denchworth, England in A.D. 1000 through, as of this edition, A.D. 2015. This branch, throughout the ages since its founding, has seen history unfold and has participated in some of the most important events of the last thousand years of English and American history.

Noteworthy among these participants include JOHN DE LA HYDE, chronicler, grammarian, poet, physicist and Abbot of St. Albans Abbey during the 13^th century; WILLIAM HYDE who traveled to the New World and was one of the founding fathers of the British Colony of Connecticut in the 17^th century; JACOB HYDE, a British Colonial Captain during the French-Indian War in the 18^th century who later served as a Surveyor of Highways during the American Revolution; his son, JOSEPH HYDE who served in CAPT. JONATHAN RUDD'S company in the Connecticut Regiments of the Continental Army during the American Revolution; the Reverend LAVIUS HYDE, who preached against slavery in the early 19^th century and for this was removed from his post in 1841; CHARLES BACKUS HYDE who served as an artilleryman in the Union Army during the American Civil War in the 19^th century; GEORGE EDWARD HYDE who served in the United States Navy as an aircraft mechanic in World War II in the 20^th century; STEVEN JOSEPH HYDE who served in the United States Army as a helicopter door gunner and (helicopter) mechanic in wars in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan in both the 20^th and 21^st centuries; and IAN DEVLIN LEIGH HYDE who in the United States Army flew Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in the war in Afghanistan in the 21^st Century.

Origins

There is much debate as to the origin of the HYDE family before SIR JOHN DE LA HYDE (Abt. 1000 – Unknown). WILLIAM HYDE (1597 – 1680/81) and his heirs are said to be descended from the Holy Roman Emperor CHARLEMAGNE (Abt. 742 – 28 Jan 814) through the Barons ROGER BIGOD, HUGH BIGOD, JOHN DE LACIE, ROBERT FITZWALTER, WILLIAM DE MALET, SAIRE DE QUINCY, RICHARD DE CLARE, GILBERT DE CLARE, HENRY DE BOHUN, and ROBERT DE VERE. Since the first few generations in this list include the name RALPH, derived from the Old Norse RAŌULFR, it may be surmised that the original HYDEs were either Norse invaders, or the Anglo-Saxon inhabitants of Britain during this time of Norse influence. However, adding to the confusion is the possibility that the first Ralph in the list was in England at the time of the invasion of William the Conqueror and may have held the Norman name GILBERT which was introduced to England at the same time.

As to the estate with which the HYDE family was originally connected, it seems to have been La Hyde de Southcote which was held by the family since the reign of CNUT the Great, King of Denmark, England, Norway and (part of) Sweden (c. 985/995 – 12 Nov 1035); before the conquest of England by WILLIAM I, Duke of Normandy in 1066.
